Aldesa Makes Steady Progress on the Airship Hangar Project in Teruel

Construction works at Teruel Airport on the future hangar for the assembly of stratospheric airships are progressing steadily following the launch of the project last March. This new complex, led by Aldesa and Grupo Ideconsa, will become a unique infrastructure in Europe and is set to mark a turning point in the aerospace sector.

At present, the excavation phase has been successfully completed, with more than 700,000 m³ of earthworks carried out, and foundation works are now underway. One of the most significant and distinctive aspects of the project is its innovative high-precision space-frame structure, designed to assemble airships of up to 160 metres in length. The facility will include a production area, an industrial building and a launch platform.

Aldesa’s Managing Director in Spain, Fernando Lana, explained the development and current status of the project in an interview on the programme “A Golpe de Bit” broadcast by Radio Nacional de España.

Overall, the project includes the construction of the aeronautical hangar and an associated industrial production building; the urban development and preparation of the platform; and full integration into the airport’s operational facilities, as well as strict compliance with aeronautical, operational safety and environmental regulations.

Key figures for the future hangar include:

  • 26,225 m² of interior slabs
  • 13,125 m² of exterior slabs
  • Metal structure weighing more than 2,266 tonnes
  • 35,000 m² of roofing
  • 24,676 m² of façades
  • A 60 x 52 metre folding hangar door
  • An external platform measuring 300 x 220 metres

The project was awarded for an amount of €39.77 million and has a total tender budget of €43.51 million (VAT excluded in both cases). Investment will be spread across the 2025 and 2026 financial years, making it one of the largest airport and industrial infrastructure investments in Aragon in recent years. From the formal start of construction, the hangar is expected to be completed within a 20-month execution period and will carry a guarantee of up to 10 years following acceptance of the works.
