Aldesa, a global infrastructure, energy, concessions and technology solutions group, has strengthened its strategic position in Latin America after being awarded the EPC contract for the Abangares photovoltaic park, in consortium with Ozul. Valued at approximately €80 million, the facility will become the largest solar power generation infrastructure built in Costa Rica to date.
The project stems from a strategic alliance between the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) and the Coopeguanacaste cooperative and has been structured to diversify the Central American country’s energy mix through non-conventional renewable energy sources.
This infrastructure responds to the urgent need to mitigate the effects of climate change on Costa Rica’s electricity generation, which has historically relied heavily on hydropower and is particularly vulnerable to reduced rainfall during the dry season. Located in the province of Guanacaste, one of the areas with the highest levels of solar irradiation in the country, the plant will distribute its output equally: 50% to the Coopeguanacaste grid and the remaining 50% to ICE customers.
From an operational standpoint, the complex will feature 119,028 state-of-the-art bifacial photovoltaic modules, reaching a total installed capacity of 86.3 MWp. This advanced technology will ensure high performance and a low long-term degradation rate.
Following the start of the initial on-site works in the canton of Abangares, the project is scheduled to begin commercial operations in August 2028. With this contract award, Aldesa further strengthens its international footprint and positions itself as a key player in Central America’s energy transition.
